Remote Desktop Gateway is a connection option similar to Remote Desktop Protocol but can connect without the requirement of a VPN connection. This tool is ideal if you’re not on a RESPEC owned computer but still need to utilize a remote RESPEC owned computer.
Remote Desktop Considerations:
- INTERNET SERVICE - Residential bandwidth is generally robust for download but poor for upload. Residential bandwidth is easily impacted by other users in the neighborhood. Hotel services are generally very poor and bandwidth is sporadic.
- LARGE DATA TRANSFERS - Data cannot be directly copied from the remote computer to your local computer. Data can only be copied to RESPEC servers from the remote computer. Consider doing this after hours to reduce the impact on network speeds for other users.
- DATA VERSIONING & BACKUPS - When copying data to your laptop from the server, communicate with your team to ensure they understand you’ve “checked out” a project remotely onto your device. This will help with creating multiple versions and overwriting someone else’s work. Nasuni will help to solve this in the future. When your data is on your laptop, we can’t back it up. Consider copying it back to the server on a regular basis to ensure it is captured in the nightly backup.
- GRAPHICS - Performing high-end graphics work across a VPN or through Remote Desktop will not be as if you were in the office. Pure physics cannot account for the rapid changes sent across the internet for graphical work.
CRITICAL: Your device must be setup to allow remote desktop connections and your account must be allowed to do so on the device you wish to connect to. If you have problems, contact CITS to request help.
